During the summer months I make an effort to commute by bike (technically, recumbent trike) whenever I can. My goal is at least 2-3 times a week when the weather is nice. David also regularly pedals to work, and when Rob joined us last year I was pleased to learn he is not only a dedicated bicycle commuter, but very active in community efforts to improve trails and bike routes.
When I learned about the Bicycle Friendly Business program, it was only natural that Vocalabs would apply. We're too small to have a formal bike commuting program, but there isn't much doubt that we make an effort to be Bike Friendly. In my view, if the weather is nice, the route is safe, and your commute isn't too long, there's really no excuse to drive to work. It helps that the Twin Cities has an extensive network of bike trails and a very healthy community of cyclists.
I don't know if we'll earn a designation this year or at what level. I'm not even sure it's practical for a small company like ours to get above a "silver" designation. We will find out in a few months.
